Job Link

The Joblink Program at Sacred Heart Community Services provides customers with support and mentoring to receive a resume, a voicemail number, an email address, assistance in using the internet for their job search, and suitable clothing for interviews.

Many of Joblink’s customers are in a place where we cannot imagine being: homeless, without a vehicle or even a driver’s license, nor the financial resources to simply buy a bus pass to commute to work. In addition, in many cases, they are recovering from addiction problems or are ex-offenders. Others are trying to overcome other complications of life (some of which may have been their own doing):  they lack employable skills, or need to care for sick relatives or children. As a result, they have inconsistent work histories, which makes it more difficult for them to find and keep a job. But they are trying to make it and, they deserve the opportunity to succeed.

During this current economic cycle, we have seen a large number of low income families out of work or having jobs that don’t provide sufficient income to survive. And to help them, we need more volunteers in Joblink, who can offer their time and talent on a regular basis.

The roles of volunteers include: helping customers to negotiate the internet, improving their interviewing skills by possibly doing a mock interview, preparing a cover letter, making copies of their resumes, and just being there to support them. The basic skills we need from the volunteers are:  proficiency in MS Word, web email, and navigating the internet, good writing skills, the ability to coach/encourage, patience and a positive attitude.
